Ministers and Deputy Ministers of Government, Members of Parliament, Paramount Chief and Section Chiefs of Kaiyamba Chiefdom, District Council Chairman and Councilors of Moyamba District Council, Yoyema people, Members of the Press, Social Media Bloggers, Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen,
Today marks a momentous occasion as we symbolically launch the Rural Telephony Project (RTP) in Yoyema. This groundbreaking initiative is designed to bring digital connectivity to our underserved and unserved communities, exemplifying our commitment to bridging the digital divide and ensuring that all Sierra Leoneans have access to the transformative power of technology.
The RTP is being launched across five rural communities: Yoyema (the host community), Sogablleh in Bum Chiefdom, Bendu-Cha in Bendu-Cha Chiefdom in Bonthe District, Foegamandu in Sandor Chiefdom in Kono District, and Dodo-Kortuma in Luawa Chiefdom in Kailahun District. Through these efforts, we have connected approximately 47,700 people across 114 rural and remote localities. Additionally, over 30 schools and about 10 community healthcare centers are now benefiting from the services deployed through the RTP.
The components of the Rural Telephony Project include:
- Data Center: Comprising a Satellite Dish, VSAT, switches and routers, servers, microwave, and fiber connections to aid communications to remote sites.
- Tower Construction: Five towers were constructed in Bonthe, Moyamba, Kailahun, and Kono.
- Mobile PECK: Fully equipped with two alternate power solutions (solar and generator set).
- Distribution of Digital Devices: Smart and feature phones provided to the community.
- Startup Capital: Le 5,000 (five thousand New Leones) provided for the running of the PECK.
This project is a testament to our dedication to connecting even the most remote areas of our nation. Under Pillar 4 of the Big Five Agenda, technology and infrastructure initiatives act as engines for sustainable economic growth by harnessing the power of innovation and robust infrastructure. Our Minister, Madam Salima Bah, has committed to increasing mobile penetration by 5% in 2024, enhancing the provision of accessible and affordable communication for rural and underserved areas to reduce the urban-rural divide, and providing jobs for youths in the ICT and telecommunications sector.
As we celebrate this achievement, let us remember that connectivity is not just about technology but about connecting hearts, minds, and aspirations. These telephony sites will foster economic growth, enhance education, and improve healthcare delivery in our rural communities. They will empower our citizens to participate fully in the digital age, regardless of their geographic location.
This project will propel His Excellency’s vision for digital inclusivity in Sierra Leone. The RTP is more than just a technological advancement; it is a lifeline for our rural communities. Let us work together to ensure that every corner of Sierra Leone is connected, empowered, and equipped to thrive in the digital age.
Thank you for your support and dedication to this vital cause. Together, we are building a brighter, more connected future for Sierra Leone.
God bless Sierra Leone.
